Bio

Deerfield, Massachusetts, church records show that Jonathan Hoyt had had his enslaved man, Caesar, baptized in 1741. This is the first mention of him in any records. In 1746, 1758, and 1759, he was treated by Dr. Thomas Williams. Caesar fought in the French and Indian War (1754-1763) and the gunpowder he purchased from Elijah Williams' store in 1755 and 1756 was probably for this purpose. From at least 1742 through 1758, he had an account at the store, where he also bought rum and razors. On several occasions he asked other White men to buy rum for him. Caesar paid for his purchases with cash. Entries in Zur Hawks' account book in 1759 and 1760 show that Hoyt purchased shoes for Caesar and had a pair soled.
