Vital records and church records for Deerfield, Massachusetts list the marriage of John Rowley and Dinah Freedom on May 6, 1794. They lived in nearby Greenfield. Deerfield vital records note that they were both "negroes." John appears in the 1800 Massachusetts census as living in Berkshire County. Greenfield vital records lists John Rowland, "black man", as dying on April 21, 1818, "age unknown- sup. 30."
