MA Census 1800
- Location:
- Deerfield, MA
- Description:
- In 1800, Massachusetts administered the second Federal census under the United States Constitution that required every state to enumerate and report its population every 10 years to determine the number of representatives a state can send to the United States House of Representatives. Like the first 1790 census, it was organized by town. Census takers all used the same form, beginning with “Names of Heads of Families.” Unlike the previous census, there was greater detail in identifying the ages of “Free while Males” and Free white Females” but the more general categories “All other free Persons, except Indians not taxed” and “Slaves” remained the same. Massachusetts reported its total population in 1800, including what later became the state of Maine, to be 574, 564—about 10% of the total population of the United States at that time. The original manuscript of the Massachusetts 1800 Federal census was used to create this published version in the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association Library.
