The earliest surviving reference to an African American in Deerfield, Massachusetts, appeared in a description of an encounter in 1690 between a Native American warrior taken prisoner and “the negro who watched him." This may have been the same man whose death the town recorded five years later as “Tigo, Robbert, negro servant to Jno Williams,” Deerfield's minister.
