Deerfield, Massachusetts church records dated June 15, 1735, show that "Pompey Servant to Justice Jonathan Wells assented to the articles of ye Christian faith Entered into Covenant and was Baptized." In that same year, Wells's widowed daughter-in-law, Mary Hoyt Wells, Jr. (1703-1750) moved next door into his house with property that included an enslaved woman and a "Negro boy." In 1736, "Pompey Negro and Rebecca his wife" were admitted to membership in the church. Rebecca was probably Mary's property.
