Calab Sharp (c1729-1799) of Conway, Massachusetts, kept this account book from the 1750s until 1794. Of Indigenous and African heritage, he was enslaved until his mid-twenties in Hatfield and Deerfield, Massachusetts, Sharp was a talented millwright whose skills were much in demand. He helped to build, operate, and maintain saw and gristmills in Deerfield and later owned and operated mills in the part of Deerfield incorporated as the town of Conway in 1767. Sharp’s account book records charges for mill-related work and a variety of other jobs. The ledger also records transactions with local retailers and other residents, including people of color.
