Description:: Dr. Elihu Ashley (1750-1817) kept this account book of visits, treatments, and charges for medical services to patients in Deerfield and other communities in the region from 1775-1785. Ashley apprenticed in Deerfield with Dr. Thomas Williams and briefly practiced in what is present day Worthington, Massachusetts, before taking over Dr. Williams’s Deerfield practice on his mentor’s death in 1775. The account book is part of a collection of more than 600 account books currently in the library of the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association kept by local merchants, professionals, farmers, craftspeople, and business firms from the 17th - 20th centuries.
