At the turn of the 20th century, George Sheldon (1818-1916) of Deerfield, Massachusetts, extensively researched the early history of his town and the surrounding region. He published numerous books and articles on many topics, including the region’s role in the Revolutionary War. Sheldon used surviving primary sources to identify local men, including African Americans, who fought for Independence during the Revolutionary War, such as this list he compiled of those who served from 1777 – 1781.
