Materials contained in Town of Deerfield-Law Enforcement: Box 8 in the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association Library relating to enslaved and free African Americans in Deerfield, Massachusetts include a complaint made before a Deerfield Justice of the Peace in 1761, and a bill Dr. William Stoddard Williams (1762-1829) of Deerfield, Massachusetts, submitted in 1801 for services rendered to the town. Stoddard’s bill included medical services he provided to Deerfield residents receiving poor relief, including Charles Paine (c1755-1839), an African American man.
