Description:
John Williams (1751-1816) was a lawyer and businessman who took over his father Elijah Williams’s (1712-1771) Deerfield, Massachusetts, store after Elijah died in 1771. These daybooks kept 1773-1800 are among multiple surviving account ledgers recording John Williams's day-to-day transactions with customers, including enslaved and free African Americans. The daybooks are part of a collection of more than 600 account books currently in the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association Library kept by local merchants, professionals, farmers, craftspeople, and business firms from the 17th - 20th centuries.
