Temple, J.H. History of Whately

Location:
Deerfield, MA
Description:
Whately, Massachusetts, published this town history and accompanying family genealogies by Josiah Howard Temple (1815-1893) in 1872. Incorporated as a separate township in 1771, Whately was originally part of the town of Hatfield, Massachusetts, settled in the 1660s. Temple’s history contains limited references to early African American enslaved residents. This copy from the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association Library in Deerfield, Massachusetts, includes hand-written annotations and notes likely made by the Deerfield historian, George Sheldon (1818-1916), including additional information regarding enslaved people who lived in the town.
