Description:
A certified genealogist and local historian, James Avery Smith was uniquely qualified to undertake this valuable history of African Americans of Amherst, Massachusetts, published by the New England Historical and Genealogical Society in 1999. Originally part of the town of Hadley, Massachusetts, leading citizens of what was then known as East Hadley successfully petitioned the Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony to incorporate a new town named Amherst in honor of the then-popular British army general, Jeffrey Amherst.
