Zur Hawks Day Book

Location:
Deerfield, MA
Description:
Zur Hawks (1760-1844) of Deerfield, Massachusetts, recorded daily business transactions in a day book. Hawks followed in his father’s footsteps, working as a shoemaker and tanner and living on the same lot at the north end of the village street. His accounts record many instances of repairing and making footwear for local people, including African American residents. Zur Hawks’ day books (PVMA 5330 and PVMA 5330a) are part of a collection of more than 600 account books currently in the PVMA library kept by local merchants, professionals, farmers, craftspeople, and business firms from the 17th - 20th centuries.
