Description:
Zadock Hawks (1731-1821) of Deerfield, Massachusetts, kept extensive accounts of his tanning and shoemaking business, many of which are preserved in the library of the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association. Hawks lived and worked at the north end of the village street; his daybook documents myriad daily transactions and exchanges with local residents, including enslaved and free African Americans. The Zadock Hawks account books are part of a collection of more than 600 account books currently in the PVMA library kept by local merchants, professionals, farmers, craftspeople, and business firms from the 17th - 20th centuries.
