John and Eunice Williams Day Book

Location:
Deerfield, MA
Description:
John Williams (1751-1816) was a lawyer and businessman who took over his father Elijah Williams’s (1712-1771) Deerfield, Massachusetts, store after Elijah died in 1771. John and his older sister, Eunice (1740-1798) recorded purchases and payments on the day they occurred 1770-1773 in this “blotter,” a temporary record of transactions to be later formally entered into a double entry account book. It includes numerous transactions with free and enslaved African Americans and is part of a collection of more than 600 account books currently in the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association Library kept by local merchants, professionals, farmers, craftspeople, and business firms from the 17th - 20th centuries.
