According to History of Northfield, "Ceasar the slave boy of Ensign Field is named in the records of 1722." (Temple and Sheldon, History of Northfield, 146.) Ensign Field was Zecheriah Field, brother of Ebenezer Field of Northfield. In a paper he presented on slavery in Northfield, Phinehas Field of Charlemont referred in 1879 to the same record but mistakenly identified Ebenezer Field as "Ensign Field." (Phinehas Field, "Slavery in Massachusetts," History and Proceedings of the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association, Vol. 1, p. 483.)
