Bio

Samuel Hunt (1703-1779) was born in Northfield in 1703. His parents were Jonathan and Martha (Williams) Hunt. He married Anna Elsworth in 1733 and they had seven children. Samuel owned a large amount of land in town and was among the early proprietors of Guilford, Vermont. He was a tavernkeeper as well as a farmer, and was a Captain in the militia. He served in many town offices and kept a tavern.  According to his gravestone in the Northfield burying ground, Samuel Hunt was 67 when he died "very suddenly of an apo plitick fit" in 1770. (Temple and Sheldon, A History of Northfield, 1875, p. 582)

According to the town history, Samuel Hunt enslaved an African boy called Mishap who "was a noted character among the frequenters of the [tavern] house. (Ibid., p. 310.)
