Jonathan Hoyt (1688-1779) was 17 when he was captured during a raid on Deerfield, Massachusetts, in 1704 raid by the French and their Native allies. After being redeemed in Canada, Hoyt returned to Deerfield. He served in the militia as a scout and became a Lieutenant, seeing action locally in 1746 and 1747. He married Mary Field in 1712 and they had six children, five of whom who lived to adulthood. Jonathan Hoyt died in 1779, aged 91.
Jonathan Hoyt enslaved a man named Caesar who he had baptized in 1741. Caesar's name appears in numerous account books kept by Deerfield retailers and farmers over a 10-year period.
