Bio

Zadock Hawks (1731-1821) was the second of ten children born to Nathaniel and Hannah (Belding) Hawks of Deerfield, Massachusetts. He lived at the north end of the old village street where he had a shoemaking and tanning business. He was 27 when he married Mary Bardwell; the couple had 10 children, one of whom died when less than a year old, they lost a daughter aged 23, and another child died at the age of 12. Zadock Hawks died in 1821 aged 90. Hawks's account book included numerous entries recording that he both made and mended shoes for free and enslaved African Americans.
