Zecheriah Field (1685-1716) was born in Hatfield, Massachusetts, to Samuel and Sarah (Gilbert) Field. He married Sarah Mattoon in 1711 and the couple had 11 children. The Fields moved from Deerfield to in Northfield in about 1716. Zecheriah played a prominent role in town and military affairs, attaining the rank of Captain before he died in 1746. A History of the Town of Northfield refers to Ebenezer Field (1688-1723) of Northfield's wife Elizabeth "making breeches for Ensign Field, her husband's brother." (Temple and Sheldon, History of Northfield, p. 163) This was likely Ebenezer's older brother, Zecheriah.
According to History of Northfield, "Ceasar the slave boy of Ensign Field is named in the records of 1722." (Temple and Sheldon, History of Northfield, 146.) In a paper he presented on slavery in Northfield, Phinehas Field of Charlemont referred in 1879 to the same record but mistakenly identified Ebenezer Field as "Ensign Field." (Phinehas Field, "Slavery in Massachusetts," History and Proceedings of the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association, Vol. 1, p. 483.)
