Bio

Timothy Dutton (1737-1814) was born in Lebanon, Connecticut. He was the eighth of ten children born to Samuel Dutton and Rachel (Cone) Dutton. In 1768, Timothy married Rachel Bartholomew of Branford, Connecticut. Four of their eleven children survived to adulthood.

In 1796, Timothy and Rachel moved to Northfield, Massachusetts, where he continued his business as a merchant. He became a prominent and respected member of the community, serving as a church deacon and being elected to a number of town offices. When Rachel died in 1802, Timothy married Triphena Williams of Warwick, Massachusetts, that same year. He died in Northfield in 1814, aged 78.

When the Duttons moved to Northfield, they brought with them an enslaved man named Guy (n.d.-c. 1855.) Guy long outlived his enslavers. Both J.H. Temple and George Sheldon's history of Northfield and Phinehas Field, a 19-century Northfield antiquarian, shared a number of anecdotes and personal interactions with Guy, including his recollections of being kidnapped as a boy from an African seashore and that his African name was Quambo.
