Bio

Samuel Childs, Jr. (1712-1786) of Deerfield, Massachusetts, was the son of Samuel and Hannah (Barnard) Childs. A tailor and militia officer, he was also a church deacon. He married Sarah Wright in 1739. Four of their six children lived to adulthood. From 1747-1748, during King George's War (1744-1748), Childs was in command of Fort Pelham in present-day Rowe, Massachusetts. He died in 1786, aged 74.

Childs enslaved a man named Caesar who fought in the French and Indian War (1754-1763.) Childs also rented the services of Titus, enslaved by Daniel Arms of Deerfield, and another man called Titus who was enslaved by Deerfield's minister, the Reverend Jonathan Ashley. In 1744, Childs cut out a coat and breeches for Prince, enslaved by Joseph Barnard, also of Deerfield.
