Bio

Salah Barnard (1725-1795) lived in Deerfield, Massachusetts. The son of Ebenezer and Elizabeth Barnard, Salah served in the French & Indian War (1754-1763), narrowly escaping death during the attack on surrendering British forces at Fort William Henry, New York, in 1757. Promoted to the rank of major at the end of the war, Salah was a respected member of the community, serving in a number of Deerfield's town offices. He and other town selectmen warned an African American out of town in 1765, part of Massachusetts laws regulating poor relief in the towns. Just before he died in 1795, Salah built a large tavern onto his existing house. His son, Erastus Barnard (1768-1852), ran the Barnard Tavern from 1796 until he moved to Canandaigua, New York, in 1805.
