Bio

Thomas French (1689-1759) was born in 1689 in Deerfield, Massachusetts. His parents were Thomas and Mary Catlin of Deerfield. Thomas was 15 years old when his entire family was killed or captured in a large raid on Deerfield in 1704 by French soldiers from Canada with their Indigenous allies. Thomas was among the captives redeemed (ransomed) in New France (Quebec, Canada) and returned to Deerfield by 1707. He married Joanna Field of Sunderland on 1711; the couple had eight children, three of whom died within a one-week period in 1757. Thomas French died in 1759.

On several occasions, Thomas French rented the services of Prince, who was enslaved by Joseph Barnard of Deerfield.
