Thomas Bardwell (1691-1781) was a prosperous farmer and craftsman. He was the seventh of 11 children born to Robert and Mary Bardwell of Hatfield, Massachusetts. Thomas apprenticed as a saddler with Thomas Taylor at Deerfield and practiced his trade in Northampton before moving to Deerfield in about 1717, and opening a saddler shop next to his home in the village. Bardwell married Sarah Belding of Hatfield in 1722, and the couple had 12 children between 1723 and 1744. Thomas Bardwell died in 1781, aged 82. In August, 1755, he rented Jonathan Ashley's enslaved man, Titus, to mow and rake hay.
