Bio

In Hadley, Massachusetts town records, Thomas is noted as being a "free negro of Amherst." In 1761, he married Tabitha Boston of nearby Hadley. She had been enslaved but was free by the time of their marriage. The couple hit upon hard times and on January 1, 1762, they were "warned out" of town. In many New England towns people who could not support themselves were forced to leave so that the towns would not have to support them.
