Mingo Proctor was from Greenfield, Massachusetts. On October 17, 1784, he married Tinner, who had been enslaved by the Reverend Roger Newton of Greenfield. He is listed as the head of a household in the 1790 federal census for Colrain, Massachusetts. Three people are listed in the "All Other Free Persons" column. By the 1800 census there were eight people in his household and by 1810, there were nine.
