Bio

Elizabeth was a "servant" of Samuel Billings of Hardwick, Massachusetts. It is unknown whether she was enslaved or free. She was the second wife of Peter Newport, who had been enslaved by Samuel's brother Joseph Billings, of Hatfield, Massachusetts. When she married Peter in 1779, he was still enslaved, as were his four children by his first wife, who had died in 1775.

In 1776, while still enslaved, Peter purchased land in Williamsburg, Massachusetts, from David Billings, who was a newphew of Joseph. Peter paid £5 for the land and started a farm. On July 15, 1779, Elizabeth and Peter married. They had at least two children: Azubah, born ca. 1781, and Rebekah, born in 1787.

Peter and his family were freed in 1783, on the death of Joseph Billings.
