Bio

Margaret often said that "Margaret Sashwampee Pharaoh is an Indian Chief's daughter." Many called her "Aunt Peggy." (History of the Black Population of Amherst, Massachusetts, p. 108) Margaret married Jepthah Pharoah and they lived in Amherst, Massachusetts. They worked for, and perhaps lived with General Ebenezer Mattoon. Jepthah was his valet and usually worked in uniform. The Pharaohs had five children- Sylvia, born about 1797; Dolly T., born circa 1808; Margaret Sash, born about 1812; Adaline, born about 1814; and William, born in 1816.

"Peggy Pharoah" is listed in the Amherst 1840 federal census as being "free colored" and living alone, as Jepthah had probably died. She was between the ages of 55 and 100. She was a servant for Hezekiah Wright Strong's family and lived in their servants' quarters. Margaret died in Amherst in 1843.
