Bio

Guy was enslaved by Deacon Timothy Dutton of Hebron, Connecticut, and in 1796, they moved to Northfield, Massachusetts.

From "Slavery in Massachusetts, by Phineas Field, in History and Preccedings PVMA Assn., Vol. I, 1879, pp. 485 & 486:

I have heard him say that when in Africa his name was Quambo; that when at play with other boys on the sea-shore they caught him and put him "down in a dark hole, and kept him there a good many days." Guy was tattooed, by having two marks or scars on each cheek, half an inch wide and nearly three inches long; these were made with a hot iron, and indicated royal blood.

In the summer, Guy slept on boards laid across beams in the barn. He fell off one time and when asked his thoughts about the fall, he wondered what his enslaver would say. Guy was known to have a sense of humor. When Dutton once asked him where the hoe was, Guy replied that it was with the harrow. When asked where the harrow was, he said it was with the hoe. His response to where both were was that they were together. He then added that his enslaver seemed to want to pick a quarrel that morning. Guy also liked to hide pears in his pockets for children and then pretend to stop their hands from reaching in to get them.

In 1813, Guy passed away in the barn.
