Bio

The Reverend Roger Newton of Greenfield, Massachusetts noted in his diary on July 23, 1799, the death of "Romus, a Negro Man." He was 63 years old. This probably refers to Romulus Fenimore, Sr., who lived in Shelburne, Massachusetts. He married Rose (Rozannah) on October 28, 1778. They had four children: Caesar Augustus, born in 1780; Romulus, Jr., born in 1787 and died in 1789; Amarilla, born in 1792; and Lois, born in 1798. Caesar Augustus married Phillis, who was the daughter of a woman enslaved by Newton.
