It is noted in Slavery in the Connecticut Valley of Massachusetts that Eleazer Porter of Hadley, Massachusetts enslaved a woman named Tabitha. He died in 1758 and it is possible, but not known for certain, that Tabitha might have gained her freedom then. She was no longer enslaved by 1761, when she married a free man named Tomas, who was from nearby Amherst. The couple hit upon hard times and before the Revolutionary War started in 1775, they were "warned out" of town. In many New England towns people who could not support themselves were forced to leave so that the towns would not have to support them.
