Zadock Hawks (1731-1821) was a shoemaker in Deerfield, Massachusetts. Between 1777 and 1782, are entries in his account book for making and mending shoes for Chloe. The entries appear on the debtor page for John Sheldon (1710-1793). He had no daughter by that name.
Entries in Dr. William Williams' day book for 1793 show that "Chloe Negro" paid for something with cash and was given "Ungm Lythargm", probably an ointment for warts. There were at least two African American women by the name of Chloe in Deerfield. These entries might refer to the woman enslaved by John Sheldon, or to Chloe Spencer Freeman, who had once been enslaved by Abigail Silliman (1708-1787).
