Joseph was born in Whately, Massachusetts. According to Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolutionary War (Vol. 13, pg. 923), he was 25 years old when he enlisted in 1779. He stood 5 feet, 8 inches tall and had a black complexion and black hair.
In 1777, Joseph served for two months in Capt. Salmon White’s Co., Col. David Wells’ Regiment. He was stationed at Fort Ticonderoga, New York. In 1779, he served for nine months in Capt. Benjamin Woodbridge’s Co., Col. Israel Chapin’s Regiment.
After his service in the war, Joseph married Mary Blood of Whately and they had six children, two of whom died young. Joseph Scott died of diabetes at the age of 44 on August 26, 1798, in Whately.
