Levi Prutt was from Northfield and possibly Hadley, Massachusetts. His 1779 enlistment record gives Northfield as his residence and a 1781 record names Hadley. He was born about 1757. According to Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolutionary War (Vol. 12, pg. 829), he was 21 years and seven months old when he enlisted in 1781, stood 5 feet, 6 inches tall, had a dark complexion, black hair, and dark eyes. He died on July 29, 1825, at the age of 68.
Levi is listed on “A Roll of Capt Joshua Benson In the Battallion Commanded by Col R Putnam Agreeable to the orders of the Eight Instant Septr . 9.1778”. It shows that he served for “D.W.”, which meant the duration of the war, and he was “In the Infantry”.
A 1777 clothing allowance for Capt. Benson’s company shows that Levi received two coats, one vest, three pairs of breeches (knee pants), 2 pair of hose (long socks), 2 pair of shoes, 4 shirts, 1 hat, one pair of overalls (long pants that covered the shoe tops), and one blanket. The value of the clothing received was $63.60 and he was given $16.
Levi appears on an 1835 pension roll. It states that he was a private in the Massachusetts line. He was allotted $9 per year, and he received a total of $699.46. His pension began on April 17, 1818, and he was placed on the roll on November 5, 1818. His death date is given as July 29, 1825. He was 68 years old.
