William was born in Leicester, Massachusetts in 1779. By the time he married Lucinda Day Paine of Deerfield, Massachusetts on December 26, 1810, he was living in nearby Hadley, where he owned an acre of land. Deerfield, Massachusetts vital records note that both were "Persons of color." They had four children, all born in Hadley. Julia's birthdate is unknown, William was born in 1825, Dudley in 1826, and Charles D. was born circa 1830. William, Sr. was a farmer.
