An 1808 entry in Deerfield, Massachusetts resident Orlando Ware's store account and daybook mentions "Simon Negro." David Sheldon of Deerfield purchased fabric for Simon and delivered it to him. Later that year Elihu Hoyt brought him rum from Ware's store and in 1812, Lemuel Barnard and Joseph Stebbins purchased gin and sugar from Ware for Simon. He might have been an invalid, unable to get himself to the store. If he couldn't work, he would have no bargaining power and no money, so these items might have been given to him.
